I came to Michigan Law as a first-generation law student—no member of my family had been to law school; in fact, I didn’t even know any lawyers. So you could say I was a blank slate and wasn’t sure where my law school journey would take me.
But things began to take shape after my 1L year. I worked that summer with the Ann Arbor City Attorney’s office. That job exposed me to several different areas of the law and broadened my perspective on what a law career could look like. During my 2L year, I took a wide range of classes to explore all my academic options.
These experiences served to help me focus not only on the work I enjoyed but also the work I did not enjoy. As it turns out, I found myself really drawn to Big Law.
I also have to give much credit to the Office of Career Planning, especially Pyper Alpern, ’03, to whom I said, “I have no idea what I’m doing. Please help.” OCP was with me during every step of the process. I secured a summer job with Foley & Lardner in Detroit following interviews with probably 30 firms during Early Interview Week.
Landing this job was a dream come true because I’m from Michigan and wanted to stay in Michigan. I’m looking forward to returning to the firm after graduation and starting my next journey.
