I am the son of two first-generation college students who worked hard to provide a good education for my siblings and me. I knew that earning a law degree was a way to expand upon the foundation they had built; at the same time, a career in the legal side of business had long interested me.
The trouble was, I didn’t really know what such a career would look like. I didn’t know what private practice was or the difference between litigation and transactional law. Michigan Law really opened my eyes and provided the resources to prepare me for my career.
Thanks to my classes like Transactional Drafting and Deal Skills, I am very comfortable drafting and editing contracts. And through my participation in the Zell Entrepreneurship Clinic, I was able to work with clients in entity selection, which gave me my first taste of client services.
With the framework of a transactional career taking shape, the Office of Career Planning provided me with the tools to understand the process for finding a position that really fit with my goals. I am now with the real estate group at Greenberg Traurig, working with clients like private equity firms that want to buy large portfolios of land. Because of my education and experiential learning opportunities, I didn’t feel like I was coming into the job on day one with a blank slate.
I cannot say enough fantastic things about the Law School; I came in with nothing except the hope of giving back to my family and pursuing a career in business transaction. The Law School gave me the skills to realize both of those goals as well as a lifelong personal and professional network.
