Mayté Quinn Salazar, ’18

Associate, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, Washington, D.C.

I wasn’t sure what type of law I wanted to practice when I came to Michigan. But after talking to a guest speaker who specialized in tax law, I was intrigued when she said her practice was like solving puzzles all day. As a Skadden 1L Scholar, I had the opportunity to work on tax-related matters, which confirmed for me that I wanted to pursue this type of law. My OCP attorney-counselor was instrumental in getting me in the door at Skadden. He helped me refine my resume and cover letter so that they were top-notch, and he prepared me for the unique aspects of interviews with Skadden. He also put me in touch with other Michigan Law students who had been Skadden 1L Scholars, which helped me anticipate what to expect going in to the position. I was thrilled when I received a return offer for my 2L summer, and I’m even more excited to be joining the firm after graduation. I wouldn’t have had these opportunities without the guidance and encouragement of my attorney-counselor and fellow students, who were cheering me on. Michigan is a great place for many reasons, but particularly because of the community and how willing everyone is to help you succeed.
