I am an immigrant and identify as a first-generation college graduate— my family immigrated to the United States from Nicaragua when I was about 10 years old. Growing up, I wanted to be an immigration attorney because that was the framework in which I saw attorneys help people.
Michigan Law welcomed me with open arms, broadened my worldview, and introduced me to new aspects of the legal profession. My Contracts class sparked my interest in the negotiation and drafting aspects of the contracting process, and the Entrepreneurship Clinic showed me what it was like to interact with business clients. My career counselor was amazing and led me through mock interviews, which helped me feel confident and prepared. I was also an active member of the Latino Law Student Association. There are so many great resources at Michigan to help students succeed.
The best part about my career is that I’m helping people—and that’s what I’ve always wanted to do. On a daily basis, I have clients who come to me with questions or challenges. They’re looking to me as an adviser to help them advance their business goals. Microsoft is a huge company, and my corporate counseling has a global impact. I’m not just making decisions for myself. I’m helping advance a much larger effort.
